Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling)

Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling) is the method of applying fine sterile needles to very specific points in the muscles by a trained practitioner to promote natural healing and to improve functioning of the body. The number of needles used and how long they are left in for will vary.

Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling) targets the trigger points within the muscles and the main aim is to sedate these points to relieve pain. A trigger point is a highly irritable localised area within the muscle, that feel like ?knots? or tight bands in the muscle. Trigger points lead to an increase in muscle stiffness and tenderness and a decrease in range-of-motion. In addition, the discomfort from trigger points can radiate elsewhere from the adhesion. This is called referral pain.

The World Health Organization recognizes the use of Medical Acupuncture in the treatment of a wide range of medical problems, including:

  • Neurological and muscular disorders: headaches, neck pain, rib, frozen shoulder, tennis elbow, various forms of tendinitis, low back pain, sciatica.
  • Musculoskeletal pain

If you would like to give Medical Acupuncture (Dry Needling) a try you can book a 30 or 60mins treatment. The session will vary dependent on the ailment, it will sometimes include deep tissue massage to complement the Medical Acupuncture and find the areas that need it most. The therapist will tailor the treatment to each individual ensuring the best possible treatment is provided. Please note Medical Acpuncture is different for everyone, and results are entirely indivudual and can not be guaranteed. Some find an immediate benefit and others find little change at all. Your therapist will disucss with you during the consultation if it is the best treatment for you.
